The five best Premier League signings of 2014

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has been one of the signings of 2014

With 2014 set to draw to a close it is a time to reflect on what has gone before in the Premier League, especially the players that have made a big impact at new clubs.

Here is a list of who I think have been the best signings of 2014.

Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)

Chelsea were strong last season and Fabregas’ arrival only made the Blues midfield even stronger.

Fabregas was linked with a return to former-club Arsenal, but it was Jose Mourinho’s club who signed the Spaniard.

It has turned out to be a masterstroke from Mourinho. The former-Barcelona ace has scored twice and produced an outstanding 13 assists this season in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has created more Premier League assists than any other player who has made fewer than 250 appearances.

Fabregas has collected more assists this season than Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has in his whole Gunners career.

Diego Costa (Chelsea)

Diego Costa is the top quality striker that the Blues were missing last season. Had Costa been in the Blues team last season then arguably Chelsea would have claimed the Premier League title. Since his summer arrival Costa has found the net 13 times in 16 Premier League appearances.

There had been doubts about whether Costa could replicate his prolific strike-rate from La Liga with Atletico, but the Brazilian-born striker has blown away any doubts about his ability by finding the net regularly for the Blues.

The striker cost the Blues £32million in the summer, but he looks to be repaying that fee and helping Chelsea enjoy a very impressive season. He could just be the final piece of Mourinho’s Chelsea jigsaw.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Graziano Pelle was prolific in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord prior to his arrival in English football and looks to be a shrewd signing by Saints boss Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman had to find a replacement for England striker Rickie Lambert, who joined Liverpool in the summer and Pelle is doing a sterling job so far this season.

The £8.6million signing has scored eight times in the English top-flight, which leaves him just five goals behind Lambert’s record of 13 goals for the whole of last season.

The Italian international is a good focal point for the Saints attack and although his goals have dried up slightly in recent weeks, he is still a key player for the men from the south coast.

Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

Alexis Sanchez enjoyed mixed fortunes in Spain with Barcelona, but has been a big success for the Gunners since his £32million summer switch. The Chilean has been a constant menace to Premier League defences and has scored ten goals in the English top-flight this season.

Sanchez has also created six goals for Arsene Wenger’s team and has got the Gunners out of a hole on a number of occasions this season in the Premier League. The Chilean is already a hero at Arsenal and just keeps helping the Gunners pick-up points.

Alex Song (West Ham)

Song was another player who arrived in the Premier League via Spanish giants Barcelona. The former-Arsenal star surprising joined the Irons on-loan and in the summer. The Hammers have enjoyed a fine campaign so far and Song has been at the heart of that campaign.

He may play as a defensive midfielder, but he dictates the pace of games and is a safety blanket for the Hammers defence. Many other Premier League clubs may be kicking themselves that they did not manage to sign Song in the summer, especially his former-club Arsenal, who seems in great need of a quality defensive midfielder.

Others

I am sure there are many others new signings in 2014 that have made an impact in the Premier League in 2014. However, these are my top five and as always we welcome your opinion at Soccernews, so who are your top five Premier League signings of 2014?
